According to a press release from the Montana Department of Transportation, this past June was the deadliest on Montana roadways in a decade.
There were 30 deaths on Montana roads in June 2019, and MDT says there was no one leading cause.
In a statement, Director of MDT, Mike Tooley said, “No death on Montana roadways is acceptable. Folks are out enjoying our beautiful state and great weather, but people are dying. It is everyone’s responsibility to stay vigilant while on the road. Crashes are preventable, and so is the pain of losing a loved one.”
The MDT says crashes do not just happen on the highway. When traveling in town, on unpaved roads, as well as on the highway, all drivers, riders, and pedestrians must take care to be safe. Drivers should always: follow posted speed limits, give their full attention to the road, keep their vehicle in safe condition, scan the area for hazards, and make sure to buckle up and drive sober.
