Bear Paw Battlefield Commemoration Set for Saturday

CHINOOK, Mont. (NMB) – Members of the Nez Perce will be at the Bear Paw Battlefield south of Chinook this Saturday morning to commemorate the final battle of the Nez Perce War.

Park Ranger Casey Overturf says the event begins at 10 am on Oct. 5 and is expected to last around two hours. It is free to attend and will be held in the parking area.

Overturf says the event usually brings around 50-100 Nez Perce to the battlefield, a drum circle and possibly horses. While the ceremonial pipe is out, attendants are asked to not take photographs.

He recommends attendees bring folding chairs as there is still snow on the ground at the battlefield. Following the ceremony, the Fox family from Fort Belknap will provide food.
