The Hill County Community has something that no other community has. Hill County is home to the largest county owned park in the country, Beaver Creek Park. Lou Hagner a member of the park board explains the unique origin story of Beaver Creek Park.
“Beaver Creek Park has an interesting history. The land that is now Beaver Creek Park was originally part of the public domain, of course. In the late 1800s a good deal of the land that is Beaver Creek Park and Rocky Boy Reservation was withdrawn to the department of defense for Fort Assinniboine. Now when Fort Assinnibione was abandoned a lot of the land came back to public domain, but some very foresighted local businessmen got their head together and says you know, Beaver Creek would make a great place for a local community, what they called it was a playground at the time. So, they got their heads together and very creatively tried to tie up the park. They made some mining claims that were out there, but they also went to Congress, and they said, Congress we want a place to have a park out here, and they were successful.”– Lou Hagner
