HAVRE, Mont. (NMB) – The cattle grazing season will begin next Tuesday in Beaver Creek Park, after Labor Day weekend and will last through the end of the year. Hill County Commissioner Diane McLean says cattle grazing is one of the main funding mechanisms for Beaver Creek Park and she expects the grazing to be good as there have been some recent rains in the area.
“The ranchers pay an animal unit amount to graze in our park and it’s a mainstay for keeping the operations of the park going. It’s also a big, important part of keeping the fire danger down, keeping the range healthy.”
McLean says that during the first few weeks of grazing, people are likely to see more cows on the road than later in the season.
“It seems like the first week or two weeks is when the cows and calves are less patterned to be in an off the road during the night, but the first couple of weeks, they are kind of randomly all over. So people really do need to slow down and pay attention to that.”
McLean warns people driving through Beaver Creek Park during this time to slow down and watch out for cattle on the roads, especially at night. Collisions are common and cattle fatalities are usually reported during this time.
