LIBBY, Mont. (NMB) – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Montana Department of Environmental Quality are seeking public comment on a proposal to delete Operable Unit 6 of the Libby Asbestos Superfund site from the National Priorities List.
Unit 6 includes BNSF-owned and operated railyards in Libby and Troy, along with about 42 miles of railroad right-of-way.
The area was declared a superfund site more than two decades ago due to the discovery of asbestos from mining vermiculite.
The government argues that Unit 6 has been cleaned through remedial actions at other Operable Units of the site.
Cleanup work at the mine will continue for years to come.
