WASHINGTON, D.C. (NMB) – The US Department of Agriculture has announced the approval of a hemp production plan for the Fort Belknap Indian Reservation.
This plan gives Fort Belknap the authority to have rulemaking, regulatory and taxation authority over the commerce of hemp within the Reservation’s boundaries.
Any person that wants to cultivate hemp on the reservation must obtain a Fort Belknap business hemp license on an annual basis. To obtain a hemp license, one must be at least 18 years of age and either a member of the Gros Ventre or Assiniboine Tribe or resident on the reservation. They must also have no felony convictions in the previous 10 years related to a controlled substance.
No license is required for personal possession or use of hemp or hemp products.
The level of THC in hemp grown on the reservation must be 0.3 percent or less.
Fort Belknap sent their hemp production plan to the USDA in early December.
The USDA is continuing to receive hemp production plans from states and tribes on an ongoing basis.
