HAVRE, Mont. (NMB) –The Havre City Council has approved a deer management action plan.
As written, the plan attempts to tackle the overabundance of deer in Havre through a free public bow and arrow hunting season, as well as by trapping and euthanizing.
Bow and arrow hunting would only be allowed with landowner permission and in open areas. Hunters will be able to acquire a special B-license, although existing valid HD 600 or 690 licenses are also allowed.
“It’s only going to be in certain areas of the community that would be safe for archery hunting. So areas that are open enough to do that. So you’re not going to be able to stand on your porch and shoot arrows at your neighbors house and the deer,” said Mayor Doug Kaercher in response to a question from a concerned resident.
Deer that are viable must be processed and donated.
The range of possible dates for harvest are from August 15th-February 15th.
The goal of the plan is to try and mitigate the negative impacts caused by deer in and near the city and to reduce deer-human conflicts.

The plan will now go before the Montana Fish and Wildlife Commission in October for final approval. The plan would go into effect after the Commission authorizes it.
