The Havre High School football team (1-1) is looking to bounce back after suffering a loss for the first time this season. Now, the challenge awaits with Miles City/Custer County coming to town.
The Blue Ponies have not been historically good against the Cowboys (3-12-1), but last season turned it around with a (26-0) shutout on the road. Head coach Jake Eldridge looked back on that game and reminisced about what the team did well that night to translate it to this coming game.
“We went down there on the road last year and played sound fundamentally, really hard, and executed at really a high level with everything that we were trying to do that day,” Eldridge said. “That was kind of the turning point of our season where the kids finally realized, ‘Hey, we know what we’re doing and we know what we’re capable of.’ It showed on the field and we were able to put everything together.”
Eldridge gives the New Media Broadcasters listeners a scouting report of the Cowboys, including their starting quarterback, Kordt Smith, who is an integral part of the offense.
“Their quarterback is coming back. When we played them last year, he came in as a freshman for an injured starting quarterback that they had,” Eldridge said. “He actually played really well. He threw the ball really well and was athletic, so he is coming back with a year underneath his belt, so he is going to be a dynamic football player for (Custer County).”
What the Blue Pony players and coaches are looking most forward to is getting back home and playing in front of a Blue Pony Stadium crowd, according to Eldridge.
“Nothing is really different this year,” Eldridge said. “It’s another opportunity for us to play at home, hopefully in front of a great crowd and be in the friendly confines of Blue Pony Stadium and just execute at a high level.”
