HAVRE, Mont. (NMB) – A broken water pipe is still interrupting service in a Havre neighborhood during this cold snap.
Havre’s Public Works Director Dave Peterson says they made repairs yesterday, but when they turned the water back on, another section broke. Crews are working on repairs again today. Service has been interrupted for a few blocks of homes near the 600 block of 9th Avenue, where the break happened.
Peterson says that crews are struggling with three to four feet of frost in the ground. He says that warmer weather can push the frost further down, even if the ground has thawed on the surface.
Peterson encourages people who have struggled with frozen pipes in their home before to turn a small stream of water on in the house to keep the pipes from freezing. He says don’t turn the water off immediately after it warms up, as frost a few feet underground can still cause pipes to freeze and break.
