HAVRE, Mont. (NMB) – In a crowded field in this year’s Havre School Board election, Christin Hileman is hoping her experience will help her stand out.
Hileman has two kids enrolled in the District and has held jobs such as Commercial Loan Officer for Bear Paw Development and is currently a Project Manager for CLH Consulting. She says if elected, one of her top priorities would be improving teacher recruitment and retention.
“Some of the ideas that I have are working with MSU Bozeman and their rural teacher project and their masters of arts and teaching program to help facilitate teacher placement in Havre. And also just looking at what other benefits does Havre offer. We have a lower cost of living compared to a lot of other communities in the state right now. People can still afford to buy homes here, and I think we need to look at ways we can market our community to teachers looking to move into Montana.”
Hileman says she also wants to take a close look at graduation rates to figure out how to offer alternative learning opportunities.
“I think we need to determine why our children are leaving the classroom and look at ways we can identify some ways we can support them and offer some alternative learning opportunities to encourage them towards graduation. I’d also like to look at college and vo-tec placement, look at programs and incentives that we can provide students so they can have a path to a four-year college or a vocational-technical college program.”
When it comes to the possibility of the District moving to a four-day school week in the future, Hileman has said it should remain on the table, but the issue of students experiencing food insecurity needs to be looked at closely.
Election day is Tuesday, May 3rd.
