The fourth seed from the eastern division of MHSA Class ‘A’ football is moving on to another football game next week. The Havre Blue Ponies went into Frenchtown and beat the undefeated Broncs by the final score of (47-30) on Saturday afternoon.
Quarterback Griffin Terry started off the game finding running back Tate Nelson for a 15-yard touchdown connection halfway through the first quarter. The Broncs responded right back with a touchdown to start the second quarter and converted a two-point conversion. The ensuing possession saw Nelson punch his way into the end zone on the ground and Havre regained the lead along with missing their own two-point conversion.
Back and forth the Ponies and Broncs went as the home team took the lead, (23-13) early in the third quarter after scoring a touchdown and a two-point conversion to close out the half and another end zone trip. From there, it was a tug-of-war on the scoreboard as Terry rushed in for a touchdown close to the end of the third quarter to make it (23-19).
The fourth quarter was nuts as Terry threw a touchdown pass to Teegan Solomon and Havre regained the lead at (26-23). The ensuing kickoff was squibbed and deflected off a Frenchtown special teamer with the Ponies recovering deep in Broncs territory. They capitalized off the miscue as Terry hit Chris Bell for a 5-yard touchdown and Havre would open up a 10-point lead halfway through the fourth quarter.
Frenchtown’s ensuing kickoff was taken back for a touchdown and it was a three-point game right away again. Nelson would not be denied as during the next possession, he secured his third TD on the afternoon, this one from 21 yards out to make it a (40-30) game. After the Pony defense got a stop, Terry rushed for his second touchdown of the game to put Havre up by 17. Tre Gary sealed it on the next drive with an interception and the Ponies won the game.
Havre advanced to its first MHSA Football State ‘A’ playoff semifinal for the first time since 2015 and will travel to Laurel to take on the Locomotives next Saturday. Kickoff is scheduled for 1pm and can be heard on KOJM-610AM, 98.3FM, and HiLineToday.com.
