Hill County has 5 Cases of Durable Medical Equipment Scam

HELENA, Mont. (NMB) – A fraud scheme involving orthotic braces and other medical equipment is still causing problems in Montana.

Marci Bergren with the Hill County Council on Aging says that she is currently working on seven cases from Hill County and five of those involve durable medical equipment. She says this scam has cost billions of dollars and they have caught five doctors involved in the scheme. Bergren says two of those doctors are from Montana.

Scammers are offering orthotic braces to Medicare beneficiaries, saying Medicare will pay for them. Fraudsters will send the braces, even if it is not requested or medically necessary. Often, beneficiaries receive multiple braces, which is charged to Medicaid using the beneficiary’s information. Medicare may deny any future braces that are needed by the beneficiary in the future.

If you believe you have been targeted by one of these scammers call Bergren at 265-5464.
