HAVRE, Mont. (NMB) – Hill County officials gathered in the Timmons Room of the County Courthouse on Wednesday morning for their monthly meeting.
Commissioner Mark Peterson says Morris Land Surveys will begin surveying the Milk River Levy next week to identify and verify encroachments. This process will take several months and is one step of many necessary to improve deficiencies with the levy.
Commissioner Diane McLean says a burn ban for Hill County could come soon if the area doesn’t get much precipitation over the next few weeks. The Fort Belknap Reservation has already issued a burn ban as the area continues to experience dry conditions.
Health Officer Kim Larson said her office continues to primarily work on COVID and educating the public on the benefits of the vaccines. She says that older age groups have been more willing to get vaccinated than younger Hill County residents. In addition, Larson wants the public to keep on the lookout for ticks and harmful algal blooms. HABs have not been confirmed yet in any Hill County waterbodies this year, but they could be coming soon due to recent warm weather.
Treasurer Sandy Brown and others say they have noticed an increased presence of grasshoppers in eastern Montana and areas like Big Sandy, but they have not been in abundance in Havre yet. If you spot mosquito infestations, you can call MSU-Extension for assistance.
The next County Officials meeting is scheduled for July 21st.
