(Helena) In a Monday news conference, State Senator Pat Flowers and Representative Jonathan Karlen proposed 3 pieces of legislation with the stated intent of reducing property taxes in Montana.
The first would create what they call a “homestead exemption” which would exempt the first 50 thousand dollars of a homes value and the first 200 thousand dollars of a small businesses value from taxation.
The second would create a ramping tax rate, meaning more expensive houses would have higher rates and cheaper houses would have lower rates.
The third would offset part of an eligible residents property taxes if it exceeded a specific portion of the owners income.
Voting on this plan will take place in the 2025 legislative session.
