MDT Proposes Safety Enhancements on US 87

HAVRE, Mont. (NMB) – The Montana Department of Transportation is inviting the public to comment on a proposal to install safety enhancements on three sites along US 87.

The first site is located at the intersection of US 87 and Secondary Road 223 near Fort Benton, where MDT plans to install ‘cross traffic does not stop’ plaques below existing signs and to add retro-reflective strip to stop signposts.

The second site is just south of Havre from reference point 105.9 to 107.2, where MDT plans on installing a curve warning sign and panel delineation.

The final site is located at the intersection of US 87 and Old Post Road just south of Havre, where MDT plans on installing 1-2 luminaries for destination lighting, installing double ‘stop ahead’ signs on Old Post Road, adding a ‘cross-traffic does not stop’ plaque to stop sign, and adding an additional double-sided arrow sign to the left of the existing sign.

The purpose of the project is to reduce the frequency and severity of intersection and roadway departure crashes.

Construction is tentatively planned for 2021, depending on completion of design and availability of funds.

MDT will contact all affected landowners prior to doing survey work on their land. Staff will again contact landowners prior to construction regarding property acquisition and temporary construction permits.
