HAVRE, Mont. (NMB) – The Montana Department of Livestock warns the public to think twice before consuming raw or unpasteurized milk.
This warning came Thursday, May 28 after DLI found many Montanans were getting milk from local sources because of COVID-19 disruptions effecting the dairy industry.
Milk and Egg Bureau Registered Sanitarian Rosemary Hickey said drinking and eating unpasteurized milk products should be avoided as raw dairy is known to cause severe health problems.
“While milk is an excellent source of protein, vitamins and calcium essential for health bone growth, unpasteurized milk has been linked to numerous food borne disease outbreaks.
Because of this, Hickey said farmers should only offer raw milk products to immediate family members.
In a press release, DLI stated that selling unpasteurized milk for any reason is prohibited by the Administrative Rules of Montana.
