HELENA, Mont. (NMB) – The Montana Department of Revenue says more than $22.6 million worth of cannabis products were sold across the state at dispensaries in January, the first month that adults could purchase recreational marijuana.
$12.9 million of the sales were recreational, while the remaining $9.8 million in sales was medicinal.
The state brought in nearly $3 million in revenue from the sales in January, as recreational is taxed at 20 percent and medical sales have a four percent tax.
Recreational sales are allowed only in counties that approved the 2020 ballot initiative. The exception is Dawson County, which held a special election in December where voters decided to allow recreational sales after previously voting against it.
