The MSU-Northern volleyball team is playing one of the last home matches of the 2023 season on Thursday night. October is “Breast Cancer Awareness Month”, and the theme of the game will be “Pink Night”.
Head coach Jerry Wagner, who is in his fifth season at the helm, said to New Media Broadcasters that the team has had an annual “Pink Night” in the past, but that this event will be particularly special because proceeds from the shirts they sell will go towards a local charity.
“This year, we are doing it for a particular cause, which is the Havre Women’s Golf Association Assistance Fund,” Wagner said.
There is an incentive to picking up a t-shirt as well. It’s your ticket into the game on Thursday night. Coach Wagner explains more.
“If you buy one of these pink shirts, you’ll be in free already,” Wagner said. “It’s definitely a win-win situation the way we look at it. We have a great team and this is for a great cause and we are looking forward to it.”
There will be pregame festivities and a heightened emotional time for the Skylights. Coach Wagner shared how he has been getting the team prepared for the game.
“(The team has) been looking forward to it for a long time,” Wagner said. “That heightening will be good because that is what I have been trying to do with their play and their resilience being a little bit more on the urgent side to get out of those points.”
The MSU-Northern Skylights volleyball team (9-12, 1-5 in the Frontier) will have its hands full when they welcome the 19-3 Montana Tech Orediggers, who lead the Frontier Conference with a 5-1 record.
Wagner looked back on the match that his team lost to the upcoming opponent back on Sep. 29, three sets to one and said that there is still a chance to pull the upset at home.
“When we played them the first time, we played one of our finest sets start to finish and put ourselves in another good position in the fourth set with the lead (23-21) to continue on,” Wagner said. “We do have a pathway to defeating this team.”
“Tech brings enough to the table and we’re going to measure up very well and get after them,” Wagner continued.
Montana Tech and MSU-Northern will play at 7pm on Thursday night in the Armory Gymnasium. If you purchase a “Pink Night” shirt at the box office, your admission is free.
