On Wednesday evening, MSU-Northern athletics announced that the cross-country team had signed Makaela Kelly to its active roster for the fall. She will compete in cross country and distance track.
Kelly is a native to Hill County, having gone to Box Elder High School and graduating in the class of 2022 as the valedictorian. While with the Lady Bears, she played basketball and also was ran on the track and field team as well as the cross-country team, earning four letters in each sport.
Her senior year was big as a member of the Lady Bears basketball program, going a perfect (14-0) in conference play, finishing first at the District 9C tournament, and riding that momentum all the way to a runner-up finish at both the Northern ‘C’ and State Class ‘C’ basketball tournaments in Great Falls, losing to Roy-Winifred in the championship game on both occasions.
“She has a great attitude, work ethic, and understands the importance of academics,” Head coach Deborah Callahan said in a press release. “This high energy and spunky individual has the compassion to compete.”
When asked about her decision to return home, Kelly said, “It has a great academic program. The staff is also amazing.”
She will major in biology when she arrives to campus later this month and will have three years of eligibility remaining.
