MSU-N football took another loss last week to College of Idaho, (28-7), but head coach Jerome Souers certainly isn’t scoreboard chasing. He told New Media Broadcasters the defense has been coming along more so than the offense, but said there are weapons up front coming back that will balance out the attack.
“I think every week, our guys get more confidence,” Souers said. “We have more older guys on defense than we do on offense.”
“(College of Idaho) is the level that it requires to be in the playoffs. This is the level that you have to play to (in order) to win,” Souers continued. “The education continues.”
“The development of our football team defensively has been probably a little bit more advanced than our offense, but I like a lot of things that our offensive guys are doing,” Souers said. “We’re getting some (offensive) linemen back this week that weren’t there, so hopefully we’ll be a bit stronger in the offensive front.”
This week’s matchup will be a familiar one for coach Souers as the team travels to Ashland, OR to take on Southern Oregon. Souers served as defensive coordinator of the Raiders for two seasons between 2020 and 2021. With the familiarity on the other sideline, coach Souers praised his former boss, head coach Berk Brown, and said that although the odds are against them, the experience will prove to be one for the long run as this football season starts to wind down.
“They’re playing really good football and their winning games,” Souers said. “They’re making plays and they’re not making dumb mistakes.”
“I think their offense compliments their defense. They have really strong special teams,” Souers continued. “They’re just a really well coached team.”
“A lot of the guys that were freshmen when I was there are now older and they’re playing very well,” Souers said. “It’s a good trip for our kids. It’s a challenge (against) a great team. Us against the world scenario because we’re a long ways from home.”
