Havre, MT – Havre Northstar baseball’s season looked grim after their first fifteen games when they started with a 7-7-1 overall record. Fast forward two months later and Havre closed the regular season winning 14 of their last 15 games to claim the top spot in the North A.
Havre secured the number one seed by sweeping the Lethbridge Miners Sunday night winning 4-0 in game one and 7-2 in game two.
In his first official season as head coach of the Northstars after multiple years an assistant, Ben Mader, has led his team to the number one seed at districts. Coach Mader said that the “going 1-0” mindset was key factor to the 9-game winning streak finish.
“I would say so. Yeah, I had to really drill that into their heads, and I remind them in between every game of the double headers that hey that games over, it doesn’t matter anymore, It’s time to turn the page.
It was a bumpy season for the Northstars and coach Mader stated that it feels good to finish at the top, but it was his players that really made it happen.
“It feels good; and I didn’t really do much of anything. The boys just decided to come together, and all get hot at the same time. I mean every one of them is contributing one through nine and throughout most of all those games.
Havre finishes the season with a 30-17-1 overall record and a 23-5 league record, just one ahead of the Lethbridge Miners at 22-6.
The American Legion North A district tournament will be in Great Falls Thursday July 23, through Sunday the 26. The Northstars will battle the 8 seed Medicine Hat Knights at 11:30a.m. on Thursday.
