(NMB) The Havre Northstars advanced at the State American Legion Baseball tournament on Thursday with a 5 to 4 win over the Bitteroot Red Sox. Havre needed the win to stay alive after suffering a 15 to 5 opening round loss to the Butte Miners on Wednesday. Head coach of the Northstars Patch Wirtzberger was proud of the way his team responded on Thursday. “Very proud of these guys resolve, but it speaks to the experience they’ve had in the State Tournament the last couple of years.”
Brody Nanini got the win on the mound going six innings, allowing 4 runs on 4 hits. Terek Shipp threw one inning of relief out of the bullpen to pick up the save. Coach Wirtzberger said they needed Nanini’s pitching performance. “Brody was great, we just had to have a pitching performance like that today to get us through and we executed enough throughout the offense to get a big enough lead to close it out.”
The Northstars led 5 to 1 going into the 7th inning and hung on for the 5 to 4 victory. Offensively, Havre collected 6 hits on the day. The Northstars now advance to Friday’s round where they will play in another win or go home game at 4pm.
