(NMB) The Havre Northstars advanced to the undefeated semifinal of the North District American Legion Baseball tournament on Friday evening with a 6 to 3 victory over the Vauxhall Spurs. Trenton Maloughney was stellar on the mound going 6 2/3 innings giving up three runs on 4 four base hits and struck out four. Head coach Patch Wirtzberger said Maloughney’s performance was just what the Northstars needed. “He was locked in from the very start, and to hold a team like that, that can really swing the bat to four hits all night in 6 2/3 innings is a tremendous performance, one that we needed.” The Northstars had six hits on the night and according to Wirtzberger those hits came at the right time. “Ya, we really came up big in some big spots and took advantage of their mistakes. At this point in the season, the post season, that’s what it takes to win games.” Ezra Pyle drove in two runs for the Northstars. Havre plays Lewistown in the undefeated semifinal, the Redbirds beat Tri-County earlier in the day 5 to 0. Havre and Lewistown split the season series on the year. The first pitch is scheduled for 4pm Saturday afternoon at American Legion ballpark. The winner advances to the Championship game and punches their ticket to the State Tournament in Belgrade.
