(NMB) The Havre Northstars needed to win their consolation semi final game against Vauxhall on Sunday to advance to the Championship game of the North District tournament and more importantly assure their spot at this week’s State Tournament. Brody Nanini singled in two runs in the first inning and that was all the runs pitcher Kale Reno would need. Reno threw a 4 hit shut out and the Northstars beat Vauxhall 5 to zero. Head Coach Patch Wirtzberger said he wasn’t surprised by Reno’s performance. “He always seems to come up big when we need him in a big spot. He pitched us into the State Tournament last year and did it again today. He was in the zone early and he made pitches when he needed to. Defense made alot of plays for him, so, it was just a great game.”
The win put the Northstars into the Championship game where they fell to Lewistown by a score of 8 to 6. Havre now turns their attention to this weeks State Tournament and while the Northstars are playing good baseball coach Wirtzberger feels his team hasn’t put everything together yet. ” We just haven’t quite hit our stride hitting the ball yet and I’m hooping that will come around because these guys are capable of throwing up double digit hits every game. Seems like that’s what it takes to win here in the post season. I like our chances.”
The Northstars open State Tournament Play Wednesday at 4pm against the Butte Miners.
