Northstars Assessment of the Weekend Games

The Havre Northstars had a productive weekend, going (3-1) against Lethbridge and Fort Macleod to start a six-game homestand.

New Media Broadcasters talked with catcher and pitcher Chason Mader, who threw a shutout in the team’s (5-0) win to begin Sunday’s contests over Fort Macleod. He caught the other three games and also had two runs batted in on the weekend and was able to stay disciplined at the plate throughout. Mader broke down what made his play strong over the four games and how he felt like his team came together.

“(It was) pretty solid in general,” Mader said. “There were a couple little lapses between parts of games, but overall, I think I held it together fairly well.”

“The team was able to come together and follow through,” Mader continued.

Northstars head baseball coach Patch Wirtzberger agreed with his player, saying that there was a lot of continuity and fight, even in the one loss to Lethbridge.

“I thought we were really competitive all weekend,” Wirtzberger said. “Saturday night (against the Miners) was a tough doubleheader. It was a really good team (and) we found a way to salvage a split.”

“If we do all the right things, maybe we can win two, but that’s the progression of the season,” Wirtzberger continued. “We’re just not quite firing on all cylinders.”

“Against Fort Macleod, I thought we came out with the right mentality,” Wirtzberger said. “We got good starts in both games from Chason and Logan (Kinsella) and then we were able to finish it out in the end. Overall, (I’m) pretty pleased with the weekend.”

The Northstars (19-14) will have a doubleheader to close out their most recent stretch at American Legion Park, playing the Tri-County Cardinals on Tuesday for the first time this season. First pitch is scheduled for 5pm from Havre.
