Officials Urge Seniors to Protect Their Information During Medicare Open Enrollment

HAVRE, Mont. (NMB) – With the Medicare open enrollment period underway, local officials want to remind seniors to protect their personal information.

Marci Bergren of the Hill County Council on Aging says it is crucial that people do not give out any personal information

“Never give out any Medicare information, any personal information at all. Medicare is never going to call you. They will always send a letter or something of that order first. And they always try to contact you by paper so there is documentation. So you want to protect your Medicare card just like it’s your credit card. Because if false charges end up on your Medicare account, like for durable medical equipment that you never get or you’re charged for, and you need that down the road, you won’t be able to get it because Medicare will only pay for it once. You want to keep track of everything that’s on your report that Medicare sends out quarterly. And make sure you never give out that information other than your Doctor’s office, which is a place you trust.”

Although the Havre Senior Center remains closed to the public, they are available by phone and are able to provide forms.

“We have a form here at the Senior Center you can pick up if you want me to review your Part D enrollment and coverage to make everything is going to be covered properly for this next year. On the robocalls, just try to ignore them, don’t answer them or hang up on them as soon as you figure out it’s a robocall.”

The Havre Senior Center is continuing to provide to-go lunch and the Meals on Wheels program is still running. They also are handing out postcards that people can fill out for a chance to win prizes.
