Phone Scams Targeting Seniors, Veterans in Hill County

HAVRE, Mont. (NMB) ― Social Security and Medicare scammers are targeting seniors and veterans in Hill County.

Marci Bergren of the Hill County Council on Aging has had dozens of seniors tell her they were scammed and is currently working on 14 fraudulent caller cases.

Bergren provides these tips to prevent yourself and loved ones from falling victim.

“If it’s a number that you do not know, let it go to voicemail. If you feel you have to answer it wait until after the third ring and just listen before you say anything. And then when you do say hello, listen carefully and nine times out of ten when you do that the call disconnects.”

Bergren says it is a long process to reverse the damage done by these callers.

“When we have some of our seniors here in Hill County, and I imagine it is going on through the rest of the state, that have already lost hundreds of thousands of dollars it gets very frustrating to me that I can’t help all of them. So, I hope we can get them helping themselves and checking things better.”

Bergren urges anyone who has any questions to get in contact with her at the Senior Center or call Social Security and Medicare directly.
