HAVRE, Mont. (NMB) – Last week, Montana Insurance Commissioner Matt Rosendale was in Havre to host a Hail Fraud Prevention Workshop ahead of the hail season. After a large hail event, out-of-town contractors will come into the area offering repairs and Rosendale wants people to be able to tell a good contractor from a bad one.
“We’re trying to make sure that the consumers are aware of some things that they can do to make sure that contractors don’t defraud them and put them in a bad position after they’ve already had a hail event damage their property. To add insult to injury, and then not being able to get it done because they had a bad contractor.”
Rosendale says that the vast majority of contractors and insurers in the area do take care of their customers, but people do need to look out for those that don’t.
“What we’re doing is walking through and explaining some things that folks can look for to make sure that somebody isn’t trying to take advantage of that. You can pass laws and try to continue to put protections in place. But at the end of the day, if we can make sure that the consumers know what to look for, then we can keep a problem from even taking place.”
Rosendale says that different areas of Montana have been hit with hail over the last 10 years or so and he wants to keep these people informed.
