HELENA, Mont. (NMB) – Spending time outdoors around water and in swimming pools is a great way to stay active and healthy during the summer season in Montana.
A press release from the Department of Public Health and Human Services, along with local health authorities, want to remind Montanans to stay safe while having fun in the water this summer, and to be aware of the related health and safety risks.
Over the past ten years, there have been an average of 20 unintentional drowning deaths per year in Montana. Almost half of the drownings occurred in natural water, while others occurred at home or in swimming pools.
Water recreation can also cause illness from parasites that live in the water.
When enjoying water this summer, remember to shower with soap before entering the pool; don’t swallow pool, river, or lake water; learn life-saving skills like CPR, use life vests in natural waters; and avoid distractions such as alcohol, drugs, or cell phone use around water.
