Sugarbeeters football pulled off the biggest upset of the first round in the MHSA state playoff picture, defeating 8-man undefeated giant Valley Christian last week, (40-24). New Media Broadcasters asked head coach Mike Jones how he knew the game was going to be won at the line of scrimmage and how his team answered the call from start to finish.
“I think our ground game, it’s set by our line, but we have some good running backs that see well, that are pretty physical, and patient,” Jones said. “So that helps.”
“And then with the emergence of opening up that passing game a little bit more really helps the run game week-to-week,” Jones continued.
The team will now take on the No. 2 seed out of the south in Flint Creek, co-oped by Drummond/Granite (Phillipsburg). Coach Jones discussed going back to playing in the foreground of small-town Montana as the team will bus it over four hours back to the southern part of the state.
“We talked about the fact Flint Creek, that co-op down there has been pretty good for a long time,” Jones said. “We’re going to have to come prepared.”
“Just like each week, we go to the minute detail and really control the line of scrimmage again,” Jones continued. “Make sure we get the ball in our playmakers’ hands on offense.”
The (7-3) Beeters will be playing in Phillipsburg against Flint Creek (9-1) on Saturday. Kickoff is scheduled for 1pm and the game will be broadcast on KRYK-101.3FM and HiLineToday.com.
