(Missoula) – A University of Montana professor is heading to one of the world’s most prestigious institutions for the academic year. Dr. Robert Saldin, a political scientist and co-director of UM’s Democracy Studies Program, has been awarded the highly competitive Leverhulme Visiting Professorship at the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom.
During his appointment, which runs through July of 2027, Saldin will research the role of the Clinton administration and U.S. political actors in the Northern Ireland peace process during the late 1990s. He will collaborate with international scholars to build a digital archive of the historic 1998 Good Friday Agreement before delivering a series of lectures across the U.K.
UM history professor Kyle Volk called the selection a major point of pride for the university and a testament to the quality of research being produced in Missoula. Saldin plans to bring his findings back to enhance UM’s Democracy Studies Program, which launched in 2024 to strengthen civic education in Montana.
