Walk For Sobriety Set for Friday in Rocky Boy

ROCKY BOY, Mont. (NMB) – After having to cancel last year due to the pandemic, Rocky Boy Health Center’s Walk for Sobriety is back this year.

The three mile walk will begin at 9 AM on Friday at the old Stone Child College parking lot and will conclude at the Pow Wow Grounds.

Terrie Stump of the Rocky Boy Health Board says this event began back in 1991 and many organizations have made sure the walk has continued over the years.

“There’s numerous organizations: The Chippewa Cree Wellness Coalition is in charge. I’m part of the diabetes prevention program, so we’re kind of taking the reins and organizing. The Rocky Boy Health Center, White Sky (Hope Center), TANF (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families), Housing, the Chippewa Cree Construction Corporation, Natural Resources, the Rocky Boy Police Department, the Rocky Boy School, Tobacco Prevention Program and of course the Chippewa Cree Business Committee.”

The walk will feature stops along the road that detail the lives of people impacting by drugs and alcohol.

“We will have those testimonies displayed along the road and just celebrating the recovering addicts, the resilience of our community.”

There will also be a focus on the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Persons Crisis, as well as the recent discovery of hundreds of unmarked graves at a former Residential School in British Columbia.

Lunch will be provided, as well as transportation back to the parking lot after the event.

People can also choose to bike the three miles, but they are asked to wear a helmet.

Participants are urged to social distance and wear a mask.
