HAVRE, Mont. (NMB) – For the fourth year in a row, the Fresno Chapter of Walleyes Unlimited will be collecting old Christmas trees to sink into the Fresno Reservoir to help improve the spawning habitat for perch and other fish.
Chapter President Nate Molstad says they will bundle and sink the trees in the reservoir this spring.
“We have one dedicated drop-off spot. It’s the same location as we’ve done the prior years. That’s at Memorial Park at 5th Avenue across from the softball field. The City will be providing a dumpster there, I believe starting on the 26th.”
Molstad says they are generally able to collect 100 to 125 trees in the Havre area, but they are looking for more trees.
“We’re looking to grow that number. Actually, we’re reaching out to some other Walleye Chapters, Great Falls specifically, maybe a few others. Trying to up that number a little bit. Within this area, it seems we can get between 100 and 125 trees.”
Molstad says that this project has been successful and they know the fish are using the trees.
