HELENA, Mont. (NMB) – Monday, May 26 the Montana Department of Livestock (DOL) urged Montanans to adhere to all swine and pork product import and export requirements.
As COVID-19 has impacted meat packing plants across the nation, many companies have started to use unconventional methods to sell and move swine.
DOL Assistant State Veterinarian Tahnee Szymanski said, “We are happy to see Montanans supporting swine producers in other states who have lost their market access. However, we have a responsibility to protect the health of our Montana swine herd and our import requirements assure only healthy animals come to Montana.”
Some of the requirements DOL is asking farmers to follow is to make sure they have a health certificate and import number for all swine transported for slaughter and that all meat products are federally inspected before they are sold.
