Great Northern Fair Board Holds Monthly Meeting

HAVRE, Mont (NMB) – The Great Northern Fair Board convened on Tuesday afternoon for their regular monthly meeting.

Due to the fact that the Board still has only two voting members, they were unable to establish a quorum, which means they could not vote on any agenda items. The Board needs four voting members present for a quorum.

Board member Michelle Burchard said she had not heard anything from the County Commission regarding the filling of vacancies, other than that they have conducted a few interviews. Several people in attendance said they had applied but have yet to hear back.

Hill County Commissioner Mark Peterson told New Media Broadcasters on Wednesday that they would like to fill vacancies as soon as possible. Peterson added that they are still accepting applications and want to ensure the Board will be able to work together without any conflicts of interest.

Fair Manager Frank English said that the Fairgrounds is planning to host a Haunted House and Escape Room in late October. He said they are also finalizing plans to hold a family friendly event on Halloween weekend that could include live music, a bounce house, and trunk or treat.

Also discussed at the meeting:

  • The Board said the budget looks good, but were unable to vote on it due to the lack of a quorum
  • Board member Bob Kaul presented the Board with a bid offer of $670 from a company in Great Falls for a new walk-through door at the north end of the Bigger Better Barn. This purchase could not be approved, due to the fact that it was greater than $500 and the Board did not have a quorum.
  • Becky Miller of Gildford presented the Board with a proposal to provide power for campers at the north and east ends of the barn. She says the local 4-H club would foot the $8-10,000 bill to set it up, but it would be up to the Fair to maintain and manage it. This proposal could not be voted on, but Miller said she wanted to “plant the seed,” for the Board to gauge their interest
  • Frank English said the arena and Bigger Better Barn are in good shape overall, and there are rodeos scheduled for the next several weekends
  • The campground will be winterized after the second week of October
  • The Vikings Harvest Farmers Market on Labor Day Weekend pulled in over $900 in revenue after accounting for expenses
