HAVRE, Mont. (NMB) – A Veterans Day ceremony will take place this Thursday in Havre, beginning at 11 AM at Town Square.

VFW Post 497 Commander Dale Herd says the ceremony itself will be brief.

“We’re going to start outdoors over at the VFW Memorial Wall. We’re going to have just a quick ceremony. We’re going to start off with some opening remarks, an opening prayer, going to sing the national anthem, and then we’re going to have the honor guard fire a 21 gun salute followed with TAPS.”

The ceremony will then move indoors to the Elks Lodge, where Herd and State Senator Russ Tempel (R-Chester) will speak.

“And then we’re going to have a free-will donation meal afterwards of chili, which the auxiliary and members of the VFW Post 497 are going to make. We’re going to just hang out and relax and have some good chats with people, good visits. After that, people are free to leave.”

The indoor portion of the ceremony was canceled last year due to COVID concerns, and Herd says he’s glad it will be back.

“It means a lot. There’s a lot of folks in this town that are Veterans.  You may not know who they are in everyday life, because they did their service and go about their everyday lives doing normal things. There’s a lot of Veterans in this community, and we just want to be able to have a day where we can say thank you and honor all who served. That’s the motto, the decree that we should live by.”

The ceremony is open to the public.
