(Helena) – Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks has cut back on the licenses available for mule deer due to surveys that showed populations in parts of the state remained lower than desired.
This lower population is due to persistent drought conditions, particularly in southeast Montana, and coupled with hard winters that make it difficult for fawns to survive to adult hood. Because of this a recent survey has determined that the population is 48 percent below the long term average.
Mule deer B licenses are adjusted each year by the FWP based on spring survey results form across the state.
