The Havre boys’ basketball team came off of sweeps of Hardin and Custer County last weekend. The big key for the victories for the Ponies was shooting, especially from behind the arc. New Media Broadcasters caught up with Havre head coach WaLynn Burgess and he shared why the team has been able to be a threat from downtown.
“Those kids put a lot of time in. To hit 33 (3-pointers) combined for a weekend, it’s one of those things (that) I expect from you guys because I know how much time they have put in to getting those extra shots up,” Burgess said. “Once you see a few go in and see your buddies hitting a couple it kind of just snowballs.”
“We were getting open looks just through pure movement and the kids not really caring who scores,” Burgess continued. “They know they’re going to all score at some point in time.”
This was the first set of games that the Blue Ponies played in two weeks because of the holidays. As any coach would, Burgess was concerned with how the team would perform, but he said that once the team hit the floor and put up those numbers that all was right in the world again.
“Especially coming off of Christmas break, you’re always a little nervous if you’re going to come out and perform right off the bat like we did,” Burgess said. “It’s just really nice to get back out on the floor and get the running of going again. It was a fun weekend.”
Havre will have one game this week against Dawson County. That game will be in Glendive on Saturday afternoon. Stay tuned to New Media Broadcasters for a preview story later this week.
