Daines Introduces Bipartisan Bill to Combat Drug Trafficking in Tribal Communities

U.S. SENATE — Senator Steve Daines of Montana is teaming up with bipartisan lawmakers to combat drug trafficking on tribal lands with a new bill called the PROTECT act.

The legislation would give tribal courts the power to prosecute non-Native drug traffickers and execute electronic warrants—tools leaders say are critical in fighting the opioid crisis.

The bill is backed by tribal leaders across Montana and lawmakers from both parties, who say it’s a step toward strengthening tribal sovereignty and saving lives.
