Havre, Mt – In the modern sports world single sport athletes are becoming more of the normal, but at Havre High that is not the case.
At the high school level of sports, multi-sports athletes are the normal most of the rural U.S. However, that’s not the case in large city’s, and is trickling its way into rural high schools.
Blue Pony Offensive lineman Tommy Lewis is just one of many multi-sport athletes at Havre high, playing four sports. Blue Pony head football coach Jake Eldridge believes that being a multi-sport athlete can help increase high school athletes’ athletic abilities and experience.
“We want athletes first and foremost, and if the kids have aspirations to go play college, you know in whatever sport it is, they’re looking for athletes to.” Eldridge said. “The whole sports specializing thing is something we can hopefully get away from and is something we definitely don’t want in our program. We want our kids doing as much as they can because we think it’s going to help them be a more well-rounded athlete for sure.”
Tommy Lewis is gearing up for his senior season before heading to play football for Montana State University.
