Havre School Board Election Candidate Profile: Erin Jensen

HAVRE, Mont. (NMB) – A mother with three children in Havre Public Schools, Erin Jensen says she would be a great fit as a Trustee on the Havre School Board.

Jensen says she believes there is a lack of trust between the teachers and the school board, and cited an example from a recent Board meeting where a proposed four-day school week was rejected.

“There is very obvious eye-rolling when teachers would speak at that last meeting. Phone scrolling, just not being connected while they’re in the meeting, so whether or not they’re actually listening to what people have to say would be a pretty big concern to a lot of people. And I feel that those people deserve respect and deserve to be acknowledged for what they are bringing and saying.”

Jensen says another priority if elected would be to focus on improving the dropout rate, as well as teacher retention.

“Retaining our teachers has not been going very well and we’re also not able to get a lot of teachers interested in coming to Havre, so I would like to see what we could do about fixing that.”

Jensen says she was in favor of moving to a four-day school week next school year.

“I was in favor of a four-day school week once I had talked to several teachers and saw the potential educational benefits to that, as well as listening to the teachers talk about how it could make them more productive and make them better teachers as well, I feel the benefits outweigh the drawbacks, and I feel it should’ve been something that we were willing to at least give a try to see if that would help fix it.”

Election day is Tuesday, May 3rd.
