HAVRE, Mont. (NMB) – The Hill County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents of an ongoing phone scam where people are receiving calls from a scammer spoofing their phone number.
The scammer identifies themselves as a member of law enforcement and tells the victim they have warrants out for their arrest. The scammer then tries to get the victim’s credit card information or tells them to wire money through electronic transfer, and warns they will be arrested if they don’t comply.
The scammer then tells the victim they are to keep the information confidential and not to tell anyone about the phone call.
Some of these calls are coming from someone that claims to be Deputy Ryan Shawn, who then may request that they meet him at the Sheriff’s Office. There is no Ryan Shawn at the Hill County Sheriff’s Office.
The Hill County Sheriff’s Office will never ask for your credit card information and will never ask you to send money by electronic transfer.
If you receive a call from the Hill County Sheriff’s Office and question its validity, always get the caller’s name and call the dispatch center at 265-2512, extension 0, to verify the call.
