It’s School Lunch Hero Day & NMB Spoke With Chinook High School’s Head Cook

HAVRE, Mont. (NMB) – Today is School Lunch Hero Day and the Montana Office of Public Instruction is honoring all school nutrition specialists across the state for their outstanding service and efforts this year.

With the COVID-19 pandemic, school nutrition professionals have had to adapt in a variety of unexpected ways to keep students fed.

Chinook High School Head Cook and Manager Heidi Brown said they have increased production and are making about 180 lunches and 160 breakfast meals a day and packaging all these meals is not always easy.

“It takes a lot longer to open 180 paper bags than anyone would ever expect. So, we’ve been kind of lucky our principal has let us use aides in order to make it work out. And then the bus drivers put the food out, they put it just out in front of the bus on the stairs so they’re still staying the six-foot distance.”

Brown said they’ve received a lot of positive feedback and they enjoy seeing the excitement each meal brings.

“They’re all excited just to open their sack lunch and see what’s new in there for the day. I kind of jokingly said, you know, it’s something from the school that doesn’t include homework. So, we’ve heard a lot of positives – kids have really enjoyed getting something and having contact.”

Brown concluded that these meals are especially important right now because many families are struggling to make ends meet during COVID-19.

Today, New Media Broadcasters would like to invite everyone to say thank you to their local school lunch heroes for their amazing service and efforts this year.
