(NMB) – A federal lawsuit filed by the Campaign Legal Center on Tuesday alleges that the National Rifle Association illegally funneled money through shell companies to various Republican candidates, including Matt Rosendale, who is currently Montana’s lone member of the House of Representatives.
The lawsuit alleges that in the 2018 election cycle, Rosendale accepted illegal, unreported, and excessive contributions totaling over $383,000 from the NRA’s American Institute for Legislative Action.
The NRA has called the lawsuit “another premeditated abuse of the public by our adversaries — who will stop at nothing in their pursuit of their anti-freedom agenda. This latest action is as misguided as it is transparent. Suffice it to say, the NRA has full confidence in its political activities and remains eager to set the record straight.”
In the lawsuit, the plaintiffs ask for an order barring the NRA from engaging in these alleged activities, and want the NRA to pay a $25 million penalty.
The lawsuit was filed on behalf of a gun control non-profit founded by Gabby Giffords, a former Democrat in Congress who was suffered a severe brain injury in 2012 after being shot in an assassination attempt at a Tucson mall.
