HAVRE, Mont. (NMB) – MSU-Northern’s new football coach, Jerome Souers, spoke with New Media Broadcasters this week to provide an update on the team’s progress.
With spring ball nearing an end, Souers says the team has shown great chemistry.
“We’re trying to develop a cadre of leaders and we’re getting some guys stepping forward that are able to direct the team. I think our team knows each other better than we did when we first started. That strengthens our ability to stay connected, to communicate, to solve problems together. The work ethic has been phenomenal, and that’s on and off the field. We’ve tried to involve our guys in spring ball with community service.”
With the team unable to do much 11-on-11 work due to the limited roster size at the moment, Souers says they have been working on individual drills and have spent lots of time in the weight room.
“That’s a little unusual. We have to make up for some lost time from the transition, of December and January. But the guys, as coach (Joe) O’Brien said, we had four PRs in the weight room yesterday, so our guys are really buying in, their working their tails off, and we’re excited about the improvement we’ve seen so far.”
Souers says that an announcement regarding a signing class should be coming soon.
“It’ll be over 20 guys, most will be from the state of Montana, from our region, and we’re excited about that announcement as it comes. And getting those guys to join our squad and giving us better depth and more guys to work with will enable us to work more 11-on-11, and ultimately, that’s what we need to do to prepare for an actual game. So as much progress as we’ve made, we’ve still got a long ways to go. But I really believe we’re in the right direction.”
The Lights 2022 season will kickoff on Saturday, August 27th at the College of Idaho. Their home opener is Saturday, September 3rd against Southern Oregon.
